However, exogenous application of MJ also produces notable disadvantages in terms of plant growth and physiology. In this chapter we review current published literature about the effects of exogenous application of MJ in defence responses and herbivory resistance of young conifer trees, as well as their implications for plant growth and physiology. Moreover, we proposed a series of recommendations for the use of MJ as chemical elicitor in young conifer trees.

Potential for the Use of Exogenous Chemical Elicitors in Disease and Insect Pest Management of Conifer Seedling Production

Elicitors are compounds, which activate chemical defences in plants. Various biosynthetic pathways are activated in treated plants depending on the compound used. The most intensively studied elicitor for manipulating defence pathways in plants is methyl jasmonate, which modifies e.g. the production of terpenoids, the main constituents of conifer oleoresin. Other commonly tested chemical elicit...

Quantitative iTRAQ proteome and comparative transcriptome analysis of elicitor-induced Norway spruce (Picea abies) cells reveals elements of calcium signaling in the early conifer defense response.

Long-lived conifer trees depend on both constitutive and induced defenses for resistance against a myriad of potential pathogens and herbivores. In species of spruce (Picea spp.), several of the late events of pathogen-, insect-, or elicitor-induced defense responses have previously been characterized at the anatomical, biochemical, transcriptome, and proteome levels in stems and needles. Howev...

Effects of Methyl Jasmonate and Chitosanon Shoot and Callus Growth of Iranian Hypericum perforatum L. in vitro Cultures

The present study was investigated the effects of two elicitors methyl jasmonate (0, 125, 250 and 500 µM) and chitosan (0, 50, 150 and 250 mg L-1) on shoot and callus growth of Iranian Hypericum perforatumL. in vitro cultures in separate experiments. The experiment was done in the base of completely randomized design with five replications and five explants in each replication. Methyl jasmonate...

Jasmonic acid is a signal transducer in elicitor-induced plant cell cultures.

To deter pathogenic microorganisms and herbivores, plants have developed an inducible chemical defense system. It is known that the induced synthesis of low molecular weight compounds can be provoked by exposing cultured cells to fungal cell wall fragments. In this study we show that endogenous jasmonic acid and its methyl ester accumulate rapidly and transiently after treatment of plant cell s...

Differential effects of plant ontogeny and damage type on phloem and foliage monoterpenes in jack pine (Pinus banksiana).

Coniferous trees have both constitutive and inducible defences that deter or kill herbivores and pathogens. We investigated constitutive and induced monoterpene responses of jack pine (Pinus banksiana Lamb.) to a number of damage types: a fungal associate of the mountain pine beetle (Dendroctonus ponderosae Hopkins), Grosmannia clavigera (Robinson-Jeffrey & R.W. Davidson); two phytohormones, me...
